Unknown Song #41 Identified

As promised, here's another track identified through Godzfire's work.  US #41 is "Old School Radio Bed," also by Ron Burns, and it's on another BRg album.  I'm not sure how Burns came up with the name of the song since nothing about it seems "old school" by late-'90s standards, but whatever.  There's another piece on the same album by the name of "New School Radio Bed," but it just sounds like something out of a horror movie.

At the time I made the Gut Wrencher post, there was a third song that had been partially identified (title only).  That track has now been fully ID'd, and I'll write about that in a couple days.

Unknown Song #38 Identified (w/ at least one more to follow)

Thanks to Godzfire's skill at audio editing, he was able to trip the YouTube copyright detectors on a couple NFL Primetime tracks that had previously gone through unnoticed.  The first of these is US #38, also known as the blues-rock song from 1997.  It's actual title is "Gut Wrencher," written by Ron Burns.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find much info on Burns beyond him being a member of a few bands I'd never heard of (they're listed on his Discogs page).  Gut Wrencher is found on the first BRg Extreme Cuts Album (BRg3001).  As with the other BRg songs I've previously posted about, the release date for Gut Wrencher is murky.  The track pages on the Manhattan website for this album list the release date as 2010, so that's obviously incorrect.  I suppose these BRg albums might be compilations, but—if so—I have no idea what the original source is.

Another track was identified by the same method, and I'll post about that one within the next couple days.  Again, special thanks to Godzfire for getting these two ID'd.

Unknown Song #40 Identified

The other Rick DiFonzo piece in this mini-flourish of identified Primetime tracks is "Surf Your Own Wave." I'm not sure why this one didn't get used more on the show since it fits perfectly with football highlights (much better than it does with surfing), but oh well.  In addition to its official BRg album, Surf Your Own Wave is contained on a 2015 compilation album titled Surf's Up:  Surf & Beach Rock Jams.  This album is available on both Apple Music (linked) and Amazon Music.  Again, thanks to Godzfire for ID'ing this one.

Unknown Song #39 Identified

The second of the four unknown songs to be identified on July 23rd., "Power Plant," is also the first of two to be written by Rick DiFonzo.  Rick DiFonzo was a member of The Bleeding Heart Band that backed Roger Waters around 1990, and he's also associated with the BRg production music company.  Power Plant, as well as the song I'll post the ID for tomorrow, comes from the BRg library.  This library is hosted on the Manhattan Music website.  Unfortunately, Manhattan doesn't appear to show album release dates anywhere on their streaming service.  I also couldn't find these albums on Discogs, so the year that Power Plant was released will remain murky for now.  Again, thanks to Godzfire for getting this track ID'd.

Unknown Song #41 is perhaps the most forgettable regularly-used piece of NFL Primetime's later years.  It's obviously meant to be little more than an ambient background groove, and that's the purpose it served on the show.  The first game to use US #41 was pretty memorable, though.  Given how his overall NFL career went, how many people know that Ryan Leaf actually won his first 2 starts?  Now saying he won those starts is a stretch, since his stats were nowhere near good in those games, but it's still an interesting footnote.  It was an interesting game for Buffalo, too, since it marked Doug Flutie's first action as a Bill (& his first NFL action of any kind in 9 years).  Flutie couldn't pull off his patented magic in this one, however, because Steve Christie didn't get the job done at the end.

Unknown Song #40 is probably my favorite song yet to be identified on Primetime.  It's energetic, edgy, and fun, and works well with sports highlights.  It's likely not a well remembered track, however, since it was used sparingly during its mere 3 years of service.  US #40's most memorable use was probably its last:  the 1999 NFC Championship game where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers nearly upset the St. Louis Rams 6-5 before giving up a late TD catch to Ricky Proehl.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find that NFL Primetime highlight anywhere, so here's a different one from US #40's first season of use.

Unknown Song #39 was one of a handful of songs NFL Primetime debuted in 1997 that lasted until the end of the show.  It wasn't used all that often, especially after 2001, and it didn't tend to accompany games of real import.  Still, US #39's dark-yet-ambivalent tone is quite appropriate for teams going through adversity.  It also seemed to get disproportionately used for Jacksonville Jaguars' highlights in the early-2000s, which was fitting.  This particular highlight doesn't showcase the Jags, though.  It instead features two QBs from the class of 1999 squaring off in The Metrodome.

*EDIT* - Robert Enriquez confirmed on youtube that this song was used a couple times in 2004, and it was never used in 1999.

After 7 straight posts involving songs that were used only once, it's time for a song that was actually used multiple times… albeit only in one season.  Unknown Song #38 is a standard blues-rock track that fits perfectly with the state of Tennessee.  Why, what a coincidence!  An NFL team happened to move to Tennessee the very year this song was used!  I don't actually know for sure if this piece was used exclusively for Tennessee Oilers games since this is the only highlight I have using it, but that would've made sense.  Anyway, the one highlight I do have with US #38 displays an unusually dominant performance by the Flying-B-Era Ravens.  Enjoy!
